Shooter Malone's aims for August opening

Irish sports bar, grill gets almost complete makeover

MANITOWOC — "Relaxed" and "comfortable" are two of the adjectives Keith Klein and Joe Powers use to describe the atmosphere they want to create at Shooter Malone's.

"The building won't have a commercial look, but more like a fancy home," said Powers, 39, of the downtown property at 901 Buffalo St., across the street from Maretti's Deli. "It'll be like a high-end friend's basement."

Klein, 43, also a Manitowoc native, said the century-old structure which formerly housed Wallstreat Grill, will feature a poured concrete floor with a stone look, nearly a dozen flat screen TVs, new bathrooms, and furnishings including standard height and party tables.

"This building was really rundown and we're creating a palace," Powers said, noting about the only thing left in the former restaurant surviving is the original bar.

"This is my baby," said Keith, who is going to stop his remodeling business to focus on Shooter Malone's, including working in the kitchen after it opens, they hope, by the end of August.

Their architectural plans increase the establishment's seating capacity from 82 to 142.
Smoking will be allowed, with Powers vowing their filtration system will offer nonsmoking patrons the ability to enjoy their meal without smelling tobacco.

They said their menu would feature hamburgers, steak and chicken sandwiches, and fish platters.

Powers and Keith anticipate staying open from breakfast through closing time.

The two men have invested several hundred thousand dollars for the building, real estate, new construction and furnishings. Shoreline Credit Union has assisted with financing.

Powers and Keith said they greatly appreciate the free or reduced-wage labor provided by more than a dozen friends during construction this summer.
